Oh God, this one is hard. this is so far out of my comfort zone and that’s exactly why I want to do it. If we don’t push ourselves in life to do things we wouldn’t normally do, to meet new people and experience new things then what’s the point?
As you may have noticed I like a photography project (or two!) and I’ve completed one 365 (or rather a 366 as it was Birthday to Birthday) and started another that I abandoned two thirds of the way through. Why did I abandon it? I realised that although the quest to take a photographs every day for a whole year is one that I love the idea of in reality unless you have the luxury of time to plan a shot every day then more often than not you end up taking a hurried, crap shot just so you have something to add to the project for that day. I don’t want to take photographs for the sake of it. I want to take photographs that I’m proud of, that challenge me, that tell a story, photographs that I’m happy to share.
The idea is simple. Take a photograph of 100 Strangers, but you have to have their consent, no sneaky candid shots, and find out a little bit about them. In other words lets go and talk to 100 people I would never otherwise have talked to, ask them what their name is (as a minimum) and ask them if I can take their photograph without sounding like a weirdo or a creep or offending anyone!
I took a few photographs years ago and then ran away from this project but I want to face up to it and complete it. I was going to use the ones I took originally but decided to start again completely afresh. I’m not going to set any deadlines to complete it and the only rules are that I have never met them before, I have to ask for their consent to photograph and I have to ask them about their story and at least have their name.
