Something For the Weekend #4

A round up of the things that caught my eye, made me smile, interested me, came in handy or taught me something this week.

A little late this week but I spent most of Saturday catching up with friends (and having a few drinks) and Sunday working on my photography website/blog (but that’s a post for another day)

A Toffee Wonk from The Rusty Bicycle(The best Toffee Vodka you will ever taste)

Toffee Wonk Assassin Creed Kittens

What’s not to love?

(More) Kittens On The Internet.

Great name for a band and great song, and you can download for free (if you want, but it’s polite to pay something and you can decide how much)

DIY Projects For Home Junk.

Anyone who knows me will testify that I have a hard time throwing things away (and an equally hard time not accepting others people junk just in case it comes in handy) so I’m permanently decluttering our home (and my life!)

If, like me, you’d rather find a use for something than send it to landfill then these DIY projects found on Lifehack may provide some inspiration. (Image – Lifehack)

Freegle

Speaking of decluttering, if you’re having a clear out instead of heading to the tip it’s worth posting on Freegle (Or Freecycle, personally I prefer Freegle, but they both do the same thing). Just let the community know what you want to get rid of and what area they need to collect from, wait for the emails to come in, then decide who’s going to get it. They come and collect and it’s one less thing to go to landfill – simple! (I should warn you that’s it’s also very easy to see things posted that you want yourself and end up with even more stuff cluttering your home but I have picked up some real gems over the years – another post for another day.

Our First Year Of Living In Oxford.

On September 30th The Man and I celebrated our fist anniversary of becoming full time residents of Oxford.

It’s been a great year with lots of changes and new adventures (but that’s a whole post in itself – coming soon) but safe to say it’s been one of the best decisions we’ve made.

Cheers.

Cheers

A round up of the things that caught my eye, made me smile, interested me, came in handy or taught me something this week.

Home Grown

It’s always nice when you open the door to a friend who’s visiting and there’s a surprise pile of fresh, home grown veg on your doorstep (Did I mention we have lovely neighbours?) This has happened a few times now and it’s becoming a bit of a cooking challenge. What can I make from it?

Something For the Weekend #2

A round up of the things that caught my eye, made me smile, interested me, came in handy or taught me something this week.

A little later than normal this week, but it was a longer than normal weekend so it’s allowed.

New Car Time.

I  drive a company car. I think I’m very lucky to not only have a company car but to be given the choice of some very nice cars. I know there will be lots of people who think that company cars are a bad idea because…

  • They are taxed (and the more expensive the car the more tax allowance you lose)
  • The tax you lose is money you never get back, if you were to have a car allowance at least you might own it at the end.
  • If you had a car allowance you might get more choice of what you drive (Might! A lot of companies still impose restrictions even if you are claiming an allowance)
  • There are sound financial arguments for allowance over fully paid car.

But….

  • If I was paying for it I wouldn’t be driving something as nice as this and it is a very nice car. I have an older version at the moment and love it but the new model has all the toys – and toys are important when you spend as much of your life driving to meetings, and do as much business mileage as I do.

Drunken Seagull

I'm Just A Soul Who Is Misunderstood

Councils across the country are taking action to tackle the “growing menace” of aggressive seagulls, fuelled by a diet of flying ants…    Read More

I like Seagulls. I know I’m probably in a minority but when you read this article it might change your opinion a little. There has definitely been some season creep this year in the UK with flowers blooming earlier and uncharacteristic weather for the times of year and one of the results has been flying ants swarming earlier than normal. Apparently the formic acid in ants is a bit like a Tequila slammer to the average Seagull so they’ve been celebrating spring and summer by acting like a stereotypical Brit on a booze fuelled package holiday – excited, loud and annoying.

Councils around the country are trying to take action against Seagulls by Bird proofing rubbish bins and all sorts of pest control measures but Seagulls still manage to get the upper hand in most cases –

“they are wasting money on this stuff because seagulls are just too clever.”
